Greensboro, NC - The Guilford County Animal Shelter helped rescue more than 100 animals from a suspected puppy mill near Wilmington on Friday, and now 48 rescued puppies are at the shelter looking for a new home.
The animals were found living in a trailer without electricity and with little access to food, water, or light.
Kim Alboum, the North Carolina State Director for the Human Society, described the conditions as "these are the worst conditions I've ever seen."
Alboum went on to say, "This is the worst puppy mill I have seen in North Carolina. Those animals inside that house were suffering immensely. It is filthy, disgusting."
Rescuers found the animals stacked in cages from the floor to the ceiling, and found cockroaches crawling on puppies.
Brunswick County sheriff's deputies arrested the dogs' owners, Andrew and Amelia Mills, of Wilmington, on charges of animal neglect and animal cruelty.
Most of the animals will be available for adoption after 10 days of quarantine, where they will receive medical treatment.
