Burlington, NC -- A Burlington man hopes his loss is a call to action for his neighbors.
James George says he was walking his three-year-old daschund, Shorty Sunday morning, when a pit bull attacked the pet.
George says the pit bull was on a chain, but the chain was long enough that the dog could reach the sidewalk.
He says the pit bull big his dog's legs so badly a vetrinarian would have had to amputate them.
He says neighbors had to pry the dog off of Shorty, and Shorty died before an emergency surgery could be done.
"I'm not looking for sympathy," George said. "I just want the community to be aware," he said. "What if this was a child?"
George says he thinks the owner of the dog that attacked Shorty, and other pit bulls, should be required to keep the dogs behind a fence to prevent attacks on dogs and children.
"What is it going to take for the community to step up to the plate and say enough is enough," George said.
