Alamance County, NC -- Emergency management coordinators in Alamance County are watching Tropical Storm Hanna carefully. They talk with state leaders twice daily through conference calls.
Dave Leonard, the county's emergency management coordinator, said some areas along Highway 87 North and Highway 62 South sometimes face flooding. The Haw River makes many areas in the county prone to flooding.
Swepsonville Fire Chief Drew Sharpe, who used to work for the county, said Lang Street in Haw River was often the first road to flood in the county during periods of heavy rain.
Leonard said the county has an emergency operations plan, which includes the locations of shelters. Emergency workers will open shelters as needed in the event that Hanna hits hard.
Experts remind people who live in flood-prone areas to go to higher ground before the storm hits. People should not drive on flooded roads.
Experts recommend you put together a kit with supplies to last at least three days. To find out what to include, click here.
