Greensboro, NC -- When looking to find a new job or replace the one you may have lost, don't rule out being your own boss.

Susie Blackwell, owner of Splurges, started her own small business six years ago. But instead of jumping straight into a long-term lease for a retail store, she opened her own store in her basement. She says, "It was merchandise like a store. We did everything by appointment and we had open houses."

After five years in her basement, she felt comfortable with moving on to running a retail store. She thinks starting small is what helped her succeed.

She does warn anyone who is looking to be their own boss, "Don't think you are going to make a lot of money real quick, it takes a lot of years to build."

If you are thinking about becoming your own boss, consider working with an already established business that will allow you to set your own hours. For example, Mary Kay, Avon, etc.

If you have something to sell, consider using the internet as your store. Sites like Craigslist or Ebay cost little to nothing.

If you want to open your own store, don't rule out using your own home.
