Burlington, NC -- For the next year, drivers can only drive west on South Mebane Street in Burlington.
Crews started turning it into a one-way, one-lane road today. The new traffic pattern will be in effect as workers widen the road.
The 2.6 mile section of South Mebane Street extends from Huffman Mill Road to N.C. 54 (Chapel Hill Rd.).
Workers will widened the two-lane road to four-lanes, divided by a median.
The project will cost $13.6 and is one of the projects in North Carolina funded with federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money.
Yates Construction Company, Inc. of Stokesdale was awarded the project.
Drivers can only head west on the road for about the next year as the eastbound lane is closed. Once workers finish that lane, they'll close the westbound lane and drivers can only travel east.
The project is expected to be complete by August 2011.
Intersections at Huffman Mill Road and Chapel Hill Road will be periodically closed.
People who live in the area will have access to their driveways at all times, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Many secondary roads that access South Mebane Street will be closed during the construction.
Drivers can access the street from these roads:
- Huffman Mill Road
- Lilac Street
- North Catherine Drive
- North Cardwell Drive
- Delaney Drive
- May Drive
- Terrace Drive
- Alamance Road
- Trail One
- Trail Two
- Trail Eight
- N.C. 54
