WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Cpt. Mark Garner is dead after what is being called the deadliest day for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan since 2001.

He was killed Monday. The details of his death were not immediately available.

Tuesday, Jonathan Cox, his best friend spoke to WFMY News 2.

"Mark and I were best friends since before we were old enough to know we were best friends," Cox said.

He finds it hard to deal with the reality that his friend is gone.

"I've been fortunate not to lose anybody lose anybody too close to me. I can't imagine it getting much worse than this," he said. "I think it's still something I'm getting my arms around. The fact that here's a guy I've know since before I can even remember my brother, and now I'll never see him again."

Due to Cpt. Garner being stationed in Germany, Cox hadn't seen his friend for two years. He never imagined that it would be the last time he would see him.

"How can you possibly put yourself in these shoes? One, you just don't want to. There's no way to think about that," Cox said.

Most of all, Cox remembers Cpt. Garner's generosity.

"Serving others and sacrifice I think just embodies who he was," he said. "How often can we think about somebody that we know for a fact that we could call up at any point and they really would do anything in the world for us? And so that's one less person like that."
