Greensboro, NC -- A driver led police on a chase from the North Carolina A&T campus to a busy Greensboro intersection Friday night.

According to NC A&T, police and public safety officers were escorting the marching band at the corner of Sullivan Street and Charles Drew Drive, following a band practice at Aggie Stadium.

Investigators say A&T police officers were blocking Sullivan Street to allow the band to cross the street, when a car approached the officer directing traffic.

The driver, 25-year-old Dustin Miles did not stop when the officer directed him to. Police say he drove past the officer and continued through the band's formation. Campus leaders say six students had to dodge Mile's vehicle.

A&T police officers say they tried to stop the suspect's vehicle using blue lights and sirens. When the suspect still failed to stop, A&T officers continued on the chase.

Campus police called Greensboro police for assistance. Shortly afterwards, investigators say Miles stopped his vehicle near the corner of Elm Street and Cone Blvd.

Officers on the scene say they asked Miles to exit his vehicle but he refused and rammed two patrol units. In the process, one officer received injury to his foot. Officers say they were forced to enter the vehicle and subdue Miles.

Police arrested Miles and placed him in the Guilford County Jail under a $70,000 bond. Within 20 minutes, he posted bail.

Officers at the jail told WFMY News 2 that Miles has 13 different charges. They are:

  • Assault to Inflict Serious Bodily Injury on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • 3 counts of Injury to Personal Property
  • Resist/Obstruct/Delay on a Police Officer
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Flee/Elude with a Motor Vehicle
  • Careless Reckless Driving
  • Fail to Obey Directive of a Police Officer
  • Fail to stop after an accident with Injury
  • 3 counts of Assault on a Government Official

The injured officer was transported to Moses Cone Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. A spokesperson for the university says the officer was released from the hospital and is at home.

This case is now under investigation by the NC A&T Police and Public Safety and the Greensboro Police Department. A&T says Dustin Miles is not a student.

Chancellor Harold Martin is praising police for their quick action.

"We are fortunate none of our students were injured and that the police officer was not seriously injured," Martin said in a statement released by the university. "We greatly appreciate the quick action of N.C. A&T Police & Public Safety in collaboration with the Greensboro Police Department."
