Randolph County, NC -- Randolph County Superior Court Judge V. Bradford Long made no decision in releasing video of a man shot and killed by an Archdale police officer.
Two Archdale patrol cars' mounted dash cameras captured the incident. Since the video has not been reviewed by anyone but investigators, the media does not know how much of the confrontation was captured on camera.
The Randolph District Attorney's Office told WFMY News 2 they are in favor of releasing the video. The attorney for Archdale police is against it. He said the public doesn't need to see it and fears it will prejudice potential jurors.
The incident happened in the early morning hours on Sunday, August 24. The man killed was later identified as UNC-Chapel Hill student Courtland Smith. According to Archdale police, an officer stopped Smith's SUV near the Hopewell Church Road exit. Then, an altercation ensued between the two men.
During the altercation officer Jeremy Flinchum shot Smith. The 21-year-old was transported to High Point Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Smith was a junior majoring in biology. He was also president of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
The SBI is heading up the investigation.
