As students gather to start their day...teachers have already been in class--learning to blog, Skype, Flickr and Twitter.

"How do you create a post in your blog?" asks one teacher to another.

They're learning from a program called "The 23 Things Project".

It teaches teachers to incorporate social media into their curriculum.

"Raise your hand if you want to give us something that we did yesterday that we could tweet about," says Mrs. Caldwell.

Everyday kids tweet to their peers...or even their parents.

"This tweet is from Shay's mom.  She says 'Hey class, hope everyone enjoyed their day off. I'm glad we got a break in the rain. Hope you all have a great afternoon.'"

Just down the hall, Mrs. Scales class is Skyping to her sister's classroom...in Raleigh.

"Everybody say good morning!" "Good morning!"

One of their favorite activities is the multi-faceted iPod.

"Would you rather read a book in your hands or a book on an iPod?" I asked second grader, Trace Stovall.  He quickly answers "iPod."

"Why?"

"Because it's more funner. Because it's kind of boring reading a book."

But what about the basics?

Are the kids substituting reading, writing and arithmetic...for "LOL's" or "BRB's?"

"We are using technology to teach reading and math and writing," says Principal Rick Pekar. "But what it's doing is engaging the students in the lessons."

While the students are soaking up the social networking curriculum....teachers are working tirelessly...to transform their methods.

We also want to know what you think about incorporating social networking tools at such a young age. Is it forward thinking? Or should young students stick to the basics?
