Winston-Salem, NC -- Wake Forest Baptist said they sent letters to more than 350 people affected by the medical records taken by a former employee.
The medical records were found earlier this year in a home and storage unit connected to Linda Turner, a former hospital employee not authorized to take home records.
After the records were sorted, the medical center determined 357 people were affected. Of those people, 221 are past or current employees and 136 are patients.
The hospital said while some of the documents did have Social Security numbers on employment documents and medical information, none were a complete medical history. A previous statement from the hospital in early June indicated Social Security numbers were not included in the records. The hospital now says the records include Social Security numbers used for employee identification before they changed their system several years ago.
The hospital is offering a free year of financial monitoring to anyone impacted whose credit could be affected.
Wake Forest Baptist Health said they've finished their investigation.
Turner is charged with felony larceny of medical center paperwork and records.
The hospital's privacy officer said Turner admitted to taking one or two documents over time, but blamed it on poor work habits. Her attorney said his client "is a hoarder who never intended to use the documents for her own benefit," according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
