Lexington, NC -- A dance competition in Lexington turned into an investment in the city's future.

This is the first year for Project Potential's fundraiser "Dancing With Potential Stars."  Ten groups or couples volunteered to dance and hundreds of people paid $10 a piece to vote for their favorites.

All the money raised will help college-bound students from Lexington High School who need help with scholarships, college visits and SAT preps.

Organizers hoped to raise at least $10,000 Sunday night.  At last report, they had raised more than $27,000 and are still counting.

Project Potential's Executive Director Cathy Coles told WFMY News 2 that this is a true investment into the City's future.

"We really feel like we've lost alot of jobs in Lexington with the furniture industry not here anymore and the key to really really help people in our community is to educate people."
