Winston-Salem, NC -- As everyone waits for the economy to turn around, some Triad business leaders are trying to round the corner on their own.

Biotechnology and medical research is helping that happen. Wake Forest Biotech Place opens Tuesday in Piedmont Triad Research Park.  It's called a state-of-the-art, world-class, 242,000 square-foot, biotechnology research and innovation center.

It once was called a Reynolds tobacco manufacturing plant.

Soon, it will house more than 300 jobs that will move from some of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's other facilities.

Another 100 new jobs are expected to come from the construction and support jobs for the facility, but business leaders say job creation doesn't stop inside this building.

Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce President, Gayle Anderson said there's a multiplier effect.

"All the spending, all of the supplies that they buy, all of the things that are spent in this regard are going to ripple throughout the economy and create jobs in every business that you can imagine. So, it really will affect everybody," explained Anderson.

Wake Forest Biotech Place officially opens Tuesday.

Another part of the park begins construction the day before.

Monday will be the groundbreaking for the Center for Design and Innovation.

A joint venture between the UNC School of the Arts, Winston-Salem State University, and Forsyth Tech.
