Winston-Salem, NC -- Winston-Salem Police didn't have to go far to answer a HazMat call, Sunday.
Police officers were called to their own parking lot after some people showed up with a hazardous device they found in another county.
The people told police they found the device that looked like a military mortar round, Saturday, while fishing at a pond in Wilkes County.
Police closed off the 700 blocks of N. Cherry and Oak Streets to cars and pedestrians for an hour while the Bomb Squad examined it.
They have not yet identified it, but they took it out of downtown to their hazardous device bunker.
Police say everything was okay, but this situation could have ended badly.
Police say they want to remind citizens that upon discovery of any item or device that appears to be suspicious and/or potentially dangerous, they should never touch it or pick it up. You should just simply call police immediately.
