NEWARK, N.J. -- A former New Jersey mayor is spending his first full day behind bars in a federal prison in North Carolina.
Former Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell reported to the Federal Correctional Complex in Butler, N.C., to begin serving a 2 1/2-year sentence for bribery on Monday.
Elwell requested the prison because its medical facility is affiliated with Duke University Hospital. He's had surgery for an aneurism.
The 66-year-old was convicted last July of accepting $10,000 as part of a sweeping federal probe into political corruption and money laundering that ultimately netted 46 defendants.
His lawyer tells The Record newspaper they'll vigorously proceed with an appeal.
