(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina General Assembly may be close to a deal on a proposed state budget for the coming year.

House Speaker Thom Tillis told colleagues Tuesday a compromise spending plan between Senate and House negotiators could be just several hours away. Tillis said that could mean final votes on the agreed-upon budget Thursday before it goes to Gov. Beverly Perdue's desk.

Perdue vetoed the budget last year but Republican lawmakers overrode her veto with help from some Democrats. A veto and override may occur again this year.

Negotiators have been meeting since late last week on differences to adjustments to the second year of the two-year budget approved in 2011.

Tillis projected the Legislature could adjourn its short session July 2. The Senate is aiming for June 30.
