Manteo, NC -- The beloved lead character of a show that doesn't get old through the generations has died.
Andy Griffith died at the age of 86 early Tuesday.
Dare County Sheriff's Office said that Andy Griffith passed away at 7 am at his home on Roanoke Island, NC. They said that the family will release a statement today.
The Andy Griffith Show started airing in 1960 and was a spin-off from the Danny Thomas Show. The first run of the show lasted eight seasons, airing during primetime. Griffith left the show in 1968.
The show was about a widower Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) who divided his time between raising his young son Opie, and his job as sheriff of the sleepy North Carolina town, Mayberry.
Andy and Opie live with Andy's Aunt Bee, who serves as a surrogate mother to both father and son. Andy's nervous cousin, Barney Fife, is his deputy sheriff whose incompetence is tolerated because Mayberry is virtually crime-free.
