(Greensboro, NC) -- Two pedestrians were struck and killed by a motor vehicle as they attempted to cross Randleman Road shortly before 6 am today.
Greensboro police and Emergency Medical Services responded to Randleman Road near the vicinity of Meadowview Road in response to a 9-1-1 call of a traffic accident involving personal injury.
Preliminary investigation disclosed that two adults were attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Randleman Road when they were struck by a dark-colored Chevy van with a light-colored stripe along its side. The operator of the van fled the scene. The van was last seen travelling north on Elm-Eugene Street.
The pedestrians were pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
Police are interviewing witnesses in an attempt to identify the motorist.
UPDATE: Julio Romero, 49, of 724 Creek Ridge Road, is currently in the custody of Greensboro police for his suspected involvement in this morning's hit and run accident.
Officers discovered a black Chevrolet Astro van with damage consistent with the accident parked in front of Romero's residence. Romero was later located at an auto parts salvage yard where he was in possession of replacement parts to repair the vehicle.
Romero is being charged with two counts of Felony Hit and Run, two counts of Misdemeanor Death, two counts of misdemeanor Hit and Run, and No Operator's License.
The names of the pedestrians are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
No other persons are believed to be involved in the accident.
