Employees at Shipman Family Home Care were excited to finally see their overdue paychecks Wednesday morning.

They were supposed to be paid last Friday but their boss, Gladys Shipman, left them a memo saying she didn't have the money.

"I'm here to pick up my check," said one employee.

"They told me they were here to stay, they weren't closing," said another of Shipman's employees.

"As long as they pay me what they owe me, I don't care. As of now, we are square," said LaToya Holland, employee, Shipman Family Home Care.

For some employees, the excitement faded fast.

"When you get a check and you expect to cash it, right?"

Bonita Williams picked up her check and headed straight for Carolina Bank, but they wouldn't honor the check Wednesday afternoon.

"They told me they put a hold on it. They have to evaluate the money first to see if the funds are there before they can cash it," explained Williams, Shipman's employee.

Employees tell WFMY that Ace Cash Express and even convenience stores refused to cash paychecks from Shipman.

"I've seen all that money, over $500,000 in the past four months has been sent here to Shipman, and that's our tax dollars. We have a right to know where is the money?" asks Marilyn Baird, a worker's rights advocate.

After waiting six days for a late paycheck, these workers may have to wait at least one more.
