Burlington, NC -- The Burlington Police Department hosted representatives from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) on Saturday, in hopes of helping families find or identify their missing loved one.
NamUs assists families in locating and identifying their missing family members by working closely with law enforcement and medical examiners offices across the nation.
On Saturday, people were able to develop DNA profiles to assist in investigations and identification of missing family members by getting their cheeks swabbed and entering personal information into a database. If their loved one's DNA has also been added by a coroner or law enforcement agency, they'll be notified of the match.
"They just actually made a hit on a North Carolina case a few weeks ago," NamUS worker Betty Brown said Saturday. "The young lady had been missing for 20 years. But her remains were in Virginia the whole time. And once they put that family's DNA in [the NamUs database], they were able to hit on her remains in Virginia and bring her home.
