Greensboro, NC - WFMY News 2's Food 2 Families is teaming up with Leadership Greensboro Seniors, WellSpring Retirement Community, and area grocery stores for a food drive to benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry. This emergency food drive will help restock the agency's shelves for the fall, when the need is great for our community.
In the summer of 2011, 3,507 families received emergency food; this past summer, 4,699 families! Thanks to a generous community, Urban Ministry was able to fill all these food orders, but their stock of food is in great need of replenishment.
Over the upcoming weekends, hundreds of volunteers from more than 41 congregations across Greensboro, and the Retired Federal Employee Association, will be on hand to collect nonperishable food donations at area grocery stores:
• On Saturday, September 29, and Friday October 5, volunteers will be stationed at local Harris Teeter stores.
• On Friday and Saturday, October 5 & 6, volunteers will be at Lowes Foods stores and the Bestway Grocery Store on Spring Garden Street.
• On Saturday, October 13, volunteers will collect food at Food Lion stores in the Greensboro area.
Also, look for the Greensboro Urban Ministry food collection boxes where you can leave your donations when volunteers aren't present.
Especially needed are canned protein items such as beef stew, tuna, chicken, and spaghetti with meatballs.
As many families continue to face economic hardships, the demand for emergency food has never been greater. Thank you for helping to bring food to local families in need.
