Pilot Mountain, NC -- One person died and four others were injured when a car crashed into a river Monday evening, according to Surry County Emergency Services.
The car was traveling north on U.S. 52 when it ran off the road, hit the guard rail, flipped over an embankment and then landed in the river.
The accident happened between the Pilot Mountain and Cook School Road exits.
Emergency Services reported two patients, a male and female, were taken to Northern Hospital. EMS transported two other passengers to a Winston-Salem hospital.
One female died on the scene.
The names of the victims have not been released.
Several agencies responded to the accident, and first responders and fire fighters are still on the scene.
Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
