DENVER, N.C. (AP) -- People are being warned to stay away from part of Lake Norman after a spill of thousands of gallons of sewage and wastewater.
The Lincoln County Health Department says residents shouldn't have contact with the water near an unnamed cove in the 4400 block of Burton Lane in Denver for the next few days.
The department estimates that 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage were spilled and flowed into the cove in the residential community off Burton Lane. Public works director Don Chamblee says there are about 30 to 40 properties in the immediate area.
That cove water runs into Lake Norman in the Catawba River Basin. County officials say a possible lightning strike caused the spill at a sewage pump station, which caused the pump to fail.
