Triad, NC -- East Forsyth High School & Welborn Academy of Science and Technology students are trying to help homeless communities.

East Forsyth HS students are crocheting bedroll mats, using yarn made out of plastic grocery bags. The mats will allow people to have a warm place to lay their head.

Close to 25 students are participating in the project. Crocheting the each mat takes 35-hours to make. So far, the students have completed 5 mats. Their goal is to make 20 mats. Students plan to donate the mats to Samaritan Ministries in Winston-Salem.

This is an on-going mission of the school's German Club.
For Welborn Academy, the students are packing 100 bags of hope on Tuesday. The bags will be distributed to local homeless families, as part of a school-wide service-learning project.

Recently, the Welborn students have been learning about the causes of homelessness in their social studies class and ways that they can help.

On Tuesday, students will pack 100 bags of hope from 7:25AM to 6:00PM. The bags of hope include toiletries, towels and blankets. Students will deliver the bags of hope to the Salvation Army on Thursday.

Welborn School officials say they are in need of men's deodorant and female toiletries. If you would like to donate, please contact the school at (336) 819-2880.
