Mayodan, NC -- A man was arrested after police say he fired a rifle at officers near the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.
Police were first called to the 300 block of South 7th Avenue because of a report of shots fired. Police said Matthew Jerald Steele left the area with a rifle.
While officers were near the cemetery, they said he shot in their direction. The Mayodan Police Department was able to subdue Steele with the help of Madison and Stoneville police departments, Rockingham County sheriff's deputies and North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Steele was charged with AWDW Intent to Kill, Go Armed to Terror of People, Possession of Firearm by Felon and Injury to Personal Property. He was placed in the Rockingham County Jail under a $9 million bond.
