Wilkesboro, NC -- The North Carolina National Guard's 875th Engineer company welcomed home 160 soldiers Sunday after a year-long deployment.
The engineer unit returned to North Carolina in April after a deployment to Southwest Asia, where soldiers built fortifications, control points, troop housing, and airfield infrastructure, and made improvements to facilities in Afghanistan and Kuwait.
The group of decorated soldiers received more than 150 awards collectively, ranging from the Army Achievement Medal to the Bronze Star Medal.
Friends and family welcomed the local heroes home Sunday in a demobilization ceremony at Wilkes Community College.
The ceremony wraps up a weekend of ceremonies welcoming home troops, including events in Greenville, Gastonia and Yadkinville.
