Winston-Salem, NC -- Family and friends remembered those who have given their lives fighting for our country. Lawrence Joel's daughter, Deborah Joel talked about her father's struggle on the battlefield to help others.
The Joel Coliseum is named after him. The Army Medic
grew up in Winston-Salem. President Lyndon Johnson awarded him the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroics in Vietnam.
the city held a parade in his honor in April 1967. 18 months earlier, Joel saved more than a dozen soldiers who were wounded and pinned under enemy fire. He got shot in the leg twice, but that didn't stop him. He died in 1984 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
