Chapel Hill, NC -- The ruling body over the fraternity whose president was shot and killed by police last month in Archdale was sanctioned for violating rules involving alcohol.

The Greek Judicial Board at the University of North Carolina put Delta Kappa Epsilon on social probation for the rest of the school year, according to WRAL-TV. The fraternity is not allowed to hold any social events and their pledge period was shortened from eight to four weeks.

The fraternity was placed under investigation following the death of their president, Courtland Smith.

Smith was killed by an Archdale police officer in August after he called 911 claiming to be drunk and suicidal. An unexplained altercation ensured before Smith was shot by officer Jeremy Flinchum. Smith was transported to High Point Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was a junior majoring in biology.
