Undated -- Several people have contact us about emails and messages they received regarding pets in Montgomery County.
The message says: "Montgomery County Animal Shelter is closing tomorrow. You can adopt for free tomorrow between 12-4. They will be euthanizing all animals without a home!!! Go & save a life!! 30 cats and 80 dogs left. Please re-post!"
It turns out, the email is just a rumor. The Montgomery County in question is Montgomery County, Texas. The shelter there did close due to a building lease ending, but they did not have to kill any animals.
North Carolina's Montgomery County Animal Shelter says they received at least a thousand calls about the email. Another shelter in Montgomery County, New Jersey also got hundreds of calls related to the rumor.
The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has put out an alert based on a possible poisoning campaign affecting people searching for "Montgomery County Animal Shelter". They are saying the search may lead users to click on illegitimate search results that my download malicious code to the users computers.
They confirm the rumor is being spread via e-mail, forums, and social networking sites usually in the form of a plea for readers to contact the shelter and adopt animals prior to the shelter's closing.
