Guilford County -- Some parents are concerned Guilford County Schools is not fulfilling its 2008 school bond promise to build a new Southeast Elementary School in their community.
"It was implied it was the Southeast school district," explained Kim Nobosad, who lives in the area. "So when we found out it was going to be in McLeansville, we didn't understand." Nobosad and several other members of the community learned the proposed site for school was near Mount Hope Church Road and NC 70.
"It's rare that you have the perfect amount of land--where you want it--configured in a way that's good for school construction," explained Alan Duncan, Chairman of the Guilford County Schools Board of Education. While Duncan would not confirm the location of the proposed site, he said sites inside the Southeast school district were considered. "Whether its inside or outside, we are going to serve the students the way we said we were going to serve the students."
The goal of building the new school was to help alleviate overcrowding at Alamance Elementary School and others. Wherever the school is located, Duncan said it will pull students from Alamance as well as McLeansville elementary schools.
"It was promised to this area and it is needed in this area," said Nobosad, who is also PTA president at Alamance Elementary. If the new school is built outside of the Southeast district, she worries it won't serve as many area students and leave area schools room to grow. "The impact on the community is really important."
Duncan said the school district is close to making a final decision on the location of the new school.
