Guilford County, NC -- Crews reopen the area near Interstate-85 and Business-85 after a tanker truck turned over on a ramp.
The crash happened about 6:30 Tuesday morning. The driver, 55-year-old David Corley of Texas, was trapped inside the cab until emergency crews arrived. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The tanker was transporting acrylic acid, according to the driver. An estimated 50 to 100 gallons of the acid leaked out onto the ground after the crash while 4,500 to 5,000 gallons of if remained vulnerable in the damaged tanker.
A replacement tanker truck arrived before noon and began safely off-loading the chemical from the wrecked tanker.
Emergency crews worried forecasted rain would cause a reaction with the acid forming a toxic vapor cloud.
But those fears subsided once haz mat teams arrived.
"The haz mat is telling me now that the water reaction...they initially thought there was a problem with that, but they're not concerned about it now," explained Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Captain, Jeff Thomas.
Corley is charged with exceeding a safe speed limit.
