Winston-Salem, NC -- A Triad man who spent 14 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit is taking advantage of his right to vote.
DNA testing cleared Joseph Abbitt in September of rape charges involving two teenage sisters. Abbitt cast his ballot at Mineral Springs Middle School in Winston-Salem for the first time. He says voting means everything to him. "Now, I have a voice in what goes on around me," said Abbitt. "I just don't have to sit back in the cell and wait for everything to come my way. And my voice was in there marking out who I decided to vote for this election." Since his release, Abbitt has devoted his time to helping ex-cons get back on their feet.
