Rockingham County, NC-- Wednesday night was a busy one for emergency workers. As predicted the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida is dumping more rain and the winds are increasing. Winds toppling trees may be responsible for at least one death.
Emergency crews were called to Witty Road in Rockingham County around 7:45pm after a tree fell on a car.
At the scene, Highway Patrol told WFMY News 2 that 28-year-old Terra Swinney was killed in the accident. They said there was a baby that received minor injuries. Troopers say Sweeney was on the phone with her husband when the accident happened.
Other counties around Triad reported trees falling on powerlines and roadways, but none have resulted in any injuries.
WFMY News 2 Chief Meteorologist Eric Chilton says with the convergence of the two systems the rain totals could approach 4 inches across the Triad by Thursday. Localized flooding is possible with these amounts especially along creeks and small streams.
Rivers most likely to be affected would be the New, Yadkin and Dan Rivers.
Rain should be heaviest in the sandhills and coastal plain where totals could reach 6 inches in isolated areas.
