Elon, NC -- An Elon University senior is running for Alamance County Commissioner.
21-year-old Jeremy Teetor plans to run as a Democrat. He's a Burlington native who graduated from Cummings High School.
Teetor, who's studying education, says his big issues will be education and jobs.
Teetor says he has a contemporary perspective on education and thinks he can improve the relationship between the Commission and Alamance-Burlington School System. Teetor says funding education is a big issue, and "you get what you pay for in terms of education."
Teetor also calls Alamance County "a bedroom community" where people live for lower costs but commute to Greensboro or Raleigh to work. He wants to help the county attract more 21st century jobs.
Teetor says he began thinking about running for commissioner in January. He says a friend told him "if you can't do it, who else our age can?"
Teetor says his age has its benefits and downsides. He hopes his age will inspire Elon students and other young voters to go to the polls. But, Teetor says his age also has a stigma attached to it, and he knows he will have to convince voters he is knowledgeable and has a good enough work ethic to serve as commissioner.
The filing period begins on February 8th. Teetor is currently registered as unafilliated, but plans to change his affiliation to Democrat this week. He can file to run for commissioner 90 days later.
