Alamance County, NC -- Fire crews were called to South Mebane Elementary School early Monday morning after a teacher saw smoke in a mobile classroom.
The fire chief said the teacher smelled a faint odor around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
At 9 a.m., the teacher took the class of about 20 kids from the mobile classroom to the library. The teacher returned about 15 minutes later, heard popping and crackling above her head, and smelled and saw smoke.
The smoke was coming out of a heating and air conditioning unit on the outside of the building.
Investigators said it looked like there was a dust build-up on the heating strip.
The building is a loss. The fire caused $26,000 worth of damage to the mobile unit and $6,000 in damages to the contents, including students' belongings.
The third grade students had class in the media center on Monday and will be moved to another classroom at the school for now, according to a Alamance-Burlington School System spokesperson.
No one was injured in the fire.
