Winston-Salem, NC -- Traffic was blocked for hours Monday night after a car carrier and all the cars on it has caught fire on I-40.

It happened just before 10:00pm Monday night.

All westbound lanes near the Thomasville Road exit were shut down for several hours. WFMY News 2 viewers stuck in traffic say it was at a stand still for nearly an hour.

Winston-Salem Fire Department called in county fire units to help extinguish the fire. They used foam because the cars on the trailer have magnesium in the engines.

After investigation, crews determined the fire started because of friction from the rear brakes locking up.

No injuries have been reported. A total of $500,000 of property was damaged.
