Alamance County, NC -- Free money is up for grabs in Alamance County.
$450,000 of it as a matter of a fact. The catch, only first time home buyers can cash in.
Devonn Williamson says she knew she wanted her own space, but didn't know if she could afford it. "I was a single parent with two children and I was living with my grandparents. I had no credit. I always thought that if you buy something with cash your credit is going to be good. I found out that wasn't the case, so I had to start all over new."
So she turned to the Alamance County Community Services Agency. The group has free money to give away to first time home buyers, thanks to a partnership with the North Carolina Housing Agency. There's enough money for applicants to receive $25,000 each towards a new home.
Williamson says, "I was like oh my gosh I got a check for $20,000 to go towards a home. And then I was presented with the other $5,000 from the city of Burlington so I'm like, the first thing I'm thinking of is my mortgage is not going to be that much."
In fact, the mother of two pays just #500 a month for her mortgage, including other key bills and taxes.
The agency hopes to build 18 energy efficient homes on a plot of land in Burlington's Apple Tree Village subdivision.
The program is only available to first time home buyers in Alamance County. You must go through one year of counseling and a home buyer education class to get the $25,000. If you're interested, contact Wendy Covington at the Alamance County Community Services Agency. That number is 229-7031.
To see if there's a simiilar program in your county, call their department of housing and urban development.
