Pilot Mountain, NC -- A sewage spill in an undeveloped area of Pilot Mountain State Park forced park rangers to close the campground.

According to the NC Division of Parks and Recreation, about 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled while park staff worked to repair a failed sewer line. The sewer line serves the park's campground.

The spill was found around 8:00 Monday morning as it made its way to a ditch near Highway 52. No surface water were affected, park officials report.

No word on when the campground will reopen.
