Lexington, NC-- Most crews cleared a fire around 4:30 Monday afternoon after spending all day battling it at the old United Furniture plant in Lexington.
The call to 911 came around 5:10 a.m.. The complex that caught fire is located at 151 Elk Street.
When crews arrived they said the building was fully involved and started their attack. Firefighters from around the county including Thomasville are working the blaze. They contained the fire by 2 p.m., according to Thad Dickerson, fire chief.
"The facility's very large. And, you've got to get around to where the fire is, you can't get but so close to it anyway," Dickerson said.
He said three tenants have storage space at the facility. Brent Turf said he owns Liberty Wholesale. He said his business had been located at the facility for about four years.
He said he might be able to get a look inside the building Monday night or Tuesday.
The complex included a newer part and an older part, Dickerson said.
"The part that caught on fire first, which is already dilapidated, which is not being used, is totally destroyed. And, we have some minor water damage, well some major water damage, I'm sure with the sprinkler system running, and some smoke and fire damage to the other part," he said.
There are no reports of injuries.
Police blocked off a six-block area, Dickerson said.
Plans to start renovating the complex were in the works, according to Leon Hargrave, who said he is on the city's Redevelopment Commission. He said he did not know if the buildings that burned Monday were going to be a part of the redevelopment.
