Greensboro, NC - Most people know David Oreck for the vacuum cleaners he builds, but did you know he also owns a Guilford County company as well?
Oreck bought the Fragrant Passage Candle Company in Greensboro five years ago. It has the capacity to produce in excess of 40,000 candles a day, and employs anywhere from 30 to 50 depending on demand, which peaks around the holidays.
All of the fragrances begin in the chemistry lab, where highly skilled technicians develop every scent. Some aromas can take up to six months to develop. But the labor does not stop there, each and every wax is put under strict testing to ensure the wax and the wick burn accordingly.
Oreck, a World War II veteran is also proud of the fact that every piece of the candle is American made, "The fragrance, the wicks, the glass it's in, the wax itself all of these things are American made, now we don't make all of those things, we make the candle, but the glass is American made, the wicks are American made etcetera."
The facility, located off of Highway 29 also has a retail outlet that is open to the public.
