Sanford, NC -- A high school football player was among two people killed in a head-on collision on U.S. 1 in central North Carolina.

Sanford police told multiple media outlets that 17-year-old Joshua Dean Britt was driving northbound late Friday when his car collided with 48-year-old Anthony Boswell's car. Witnesses said Boswell's car was stopped in the wrong lane and his lights were off.

Both men were from Sanford and both died at the scene.

Lee High School Principal Greg Batten told multiple media outlets that Britt was a junior and played linebacker on the football team. He also was a member of the Lee County track team.

Batten said grief counselors will be available on campus Monday to assist students and staff.
