Forsyth County, NC -- After Thursday's crashes, you may wonder why there were no school delays. As it turns out, it was nearly impossible for school officials to have foreseen the sudden drop in temperatures that resulted in the black ice.
WFMY News 2 Meteorologist Grant Gilmore explained Winston-Salem's Smith Reynolds Airport reported overcast conditions and temperatures above freezing (34 degrees) until 7:00 am Thursday morning. The coldest part of the morning usually occurs within the hour after sunrise, and it just so happened that's when the skies cleared -- at around 7:30 am. Sometime between 7:00 am and 8:00 am, the skies cleared. That allowed temperatures to drop to below freezing (30 degrees) very quickly, which is why the roads suddenly froze. By 9:00 am, temperatures warmed back to 35 degrees.
