Winston-Salem, NC -- Phil Hanes, the former chairman of the Hanes Dye and Finishing Company and passionate advocate for the arts, died Sunday morning, according to a report in the Winston-Salem Journal. He was 84.
A private memorial service was held Sunday at the Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem.
Hanes was born on Feb. 25, 1926. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Yale University, according to the Journal.
He donated $2 million to the UNC School of the Arts during his lifetime and helped lead the effort to transform the Carolina Theatre into the Stevens Center, according to the Journal.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte.
