Randolph County, NC -- Norfolk Southern plans to increase the maximum speed of their trains in parts of Randolph County next week.
The changes will increase the speed from nine to 25 mph at eight highway crossings in Randleman and Asheboro.
Those crossings are at Stout Road, State Route 2270 (US 311 Ext.), Wesleyan Road, Commerce Place, Pineview Street, Rock Quarry Road, Spero Road, Balfour Road, and Bailey Street.
The crossings affected are on the line where two trains run between High Point and Asheboro each day.
Norfolk Southern said the change will improve traffic flow and safety, since statistics show more highway-rail grade wrecks happen at slower train speeds.
Track and signal improvements were made to allow for the increases in train speeds.
The change starts March 21.
