Lexington, NC - The Lexington area Crimestoppers launched a Facebook page earlier this month, and they hope this will help them reach a whole new audience that will help them solve crimes.

The page was launched on April 2 and so far has 157 likes.

Lt. Robby Rummage with the Lexington Police Department is the coordinator for the page, and he said it was another way to get information out to the community, "It gets more eyes out looking for certain things because there is a lot of concern to citizens around this part of Davidson County and the City of Lexington."

Rummage added, "Knowledge is power. If we can get the knowledge to the people out in the community of what we are looking for and how they might can help us, they might be more willing to call the Crimestoppers line."

Residents are still urged to call the 24-hour Lexington Crimestoppers line at 243-2400 to report tips on crimes because of the confidentiality of the line.

"Irregardless of the features Facebook offers, people need to be mindful of whatever they post may be able to be seen by others," Rummage said. "Because of the 24-hour hotline, they don't have to give their name. That's completely confidential and anonymous. Each call that comes into the Crimestoppers hotline is given a unique number. That's why it's important for them to call in. Time is of the essence."
