WFMY -- We have an update on a woman we introduced to you in October of 2011. Shari Vassello has a genetic kidney disease that causes the organ to enlarge and lose function.
There's no cure, and she needed a kidney transplant, so she turned to social media for help.
Vassello saw someone in Charlotte who found a donor on Facebook, and she decided to try that too.
Since then, we've been keeping up with her, waiting to hear when and if she would get a donor. Many of you sent your prayers and well wishes to her.
Shari went into surgery around 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The surgery will take three to four hours.
