WASHINGTON -- The Department of Defense announced the death of two soldiers with ties to North Carolina Saturday.
The soldiers were Staff Sgt. Kashif M. Memon, 31, of Houston, TX and Sgt. Clinton K. Ruiz, 22, of Murrieta, CA. The two died when their unit was attacked by small arms fire in Khas Uruzgan, Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, Oct. 25.
Staff Sgt. Memon was assigned to the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) and the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne), based in Fort Bragg.
Sgt. Ruiz was assigned to the 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne) and the 8th Military Information Support Group (Airborne), also based in Fort Bragg.
