Triad, NC -- Volkswagen AG, the German automaker, could be bringing it's newest plant to the Triad in a move the area has been hoping to see.
The Business Journal reports CEO Martin Winterkorn said the company plans to build a plant for mid-sized SUVs somewhere in the United States. Volkswagen has not ruled out locations outside the U.S.
The automaker already has a Passat plant in Chattanooga, TN, and officials say the company could choose to build the SUVs near that site.
Members of the Piedmont Triad Partnership are working to make Piedmont counties more enticing to an automaker, like Volkswagen.
The group is developing "mega-sites," or 1,000 acre plots of land with solid infrastructure and transportation access to attract big companies.
Volkswagen plans to decide on a location sometime in the near future, but probably not this year, according to the newspaper.
