Caldwell County, NC -- A memorial service in Caldwell County, North Carolina marked what would have been Zahra Baker's 13th birthday.
Zahra Baker was reported missing on October 9, 2010 in the town of Hickory, North Carolina. She was 10 years old at the time. Her dismembered remains were found in November 2010.
A service was held at the Zahra Baker Memorial on Christie Road Friday afternoon, just feet away from the spot where her remains were found in 2010.
Frozen in photos is a smiley faced 10-year-old, this is how people in the community would rather remember Zahra Baker.
"I've got a soft spot for every child out there," says Katherine Burch.
Zahra' name may have faded from the headlines but not from these people's hearts.
"We want this to be standing here when we're dead and gone to remind everyone - people need to get involved," says Jake Icenhour.
The memorial stands as a permanent reminder of that, thanks to a community who came together to care.
Making this spot no longer about what was found here, but what stands here now.
Pastor Nicky Waters says to "let the memorial remind us daily that we have the responsibility to hear the cries of children that are in this type of situation and being abuse..and try to do our parts a citizens."
