Winston-Salem, NC -- A Kernersville man was sentenced to probation for hitting and killing a 15-month-old girl with his car on April 20.
Burl Jones Jr. pleaded guilty guilty to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in the death of Imani Scales.
Investigators say the child's mother, Teneca Scales, was pushing her across a street around 10 p.m. when Jones hit them with his car. The toddler suffered brain injuries and died three days later.
Instead of sentencing Jones to 60 days in jail, a judge put Jones on 18 months of supervised probation.
Jones' attorney, Frederick Adams, says Jones had no prior criminal record, and investigators found no evidence of alcohol in his system. Court documents say Jones, however, was driving 15 mph above the posted speed limit.
