RALEIGH, N.C. -- An alert at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant in New Hill, N.C. was canceled hours after a piece of equipment malfunctioned.
A Duke Energy spokesperson said the alert was issued shortly after 3 a.m. when the malfunction caused power loss to "non-safety related electrical distribution equipment."
Employees inspected the equipment and found no threat to operating the facility safely. They said they reduced the power level of the unit to 91 percent as they continue to monitor the equipment.
No radioactive materials were released during the alert as a result of the malfunction, according to Duke Energy.
The plant was temporarily shut down in May after a quarter-inch crack was discovered in the reactor.
Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant was opened in 1987 and is about 20 miles south of downtown Raleigh.
